Hot off the Press: APTech Engineers Advance Pavement Knowledge
APTech employees are at the forefront of the pavement engineering industry and serve as experts for major transportation projects, panels, and reports. In addition, when the opportunity presents itself they showcase their wealth of knowledge in trade magazines and technical journals. Recently, our Program Director of State and National Agencies, Kurt Smith, and one of our Vice Presidents, David Peshkin, contributed to a special issue of TR News Magazine, a bi-monthly periodical published by the Transportation Research Board (TRB).
This publication features timely articles on innovative and state-of-the-art research and practice in all modes of transportation. In addition, the magazine also includes brief news items of interest to the transportation community, “research pays off” articles, profiles of transportation professionals, workshop and conference announcements, new book notices, news of TRB activities, and the TRB Annual Report. Each issue has a major focus, and the latest edition’s was pavement preservation and rehabilitation.
For the May-June 2022 issue, David and Kurt co-authored an article with other experts titled Pavement Preservation, Maintenance, and Rehabilitation. The piece focused on identifying the right treatment at the right time and for the right conditions. The article presented general preservation methods and treatments for both asphalt and concrete pavements. It also introduced significant rehabilitation options and when their use may be appropriate.
Kurt also co-authored an article titled Pavement Rehabilitation: Case Examples from Missouri and Virginia. This article looked at two case studies of concrete and asphalt pavement rehabilitation. One involved an unbonded concrete overlay on Route D in Missouri, and the other was a high polymer asphalt overlay on I-64 in Virginia. Both of these projects featured design and construction innovations that addressed unique challenges and set the stage for what promised to be long-lasting rehabilitation solutions.
