APTech provides professional development hours at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
A longstanding initiative for the professional staff at APTech is giving back to the pavement community. While staff will often speak at conferences, author research papers, or serve on committees, they occasionally make a trip back to the classroom as well.
Back in April, APTech’s Human Resources Manager Mark Sherbeyn spoke with Alexis Juarez, a senior and the president of the Cecil T. Lobo student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s career fair. While talking about APTech’s open internships and career opportunities for graduate students, they also discussed the possibility of the firm offering professional development hours for a related course.
“I thought it was a fantastic idea,” said Mark. “We’re proud of the work we do at APTech and think it’s a great opportunity to not only share, but to get students thinking about where they’d like to work after they graduate.”
On September 14, the idea became reality. Pavement Engineer Arturo Espinoza-Luque, P.E. traveled to Terre-Haute and gave a presentation to a sophomore class during their asphalt lab. The talk centered on APTech’s work with sustainable pavements and how focusing on sustainability is beneficial both from an economic and educational standpoint. To tie in with Rose-Hulman’s location, Arturo spoke about APTech’s ongoing evaluation and design project aimed at improving the sustainability of Indiana highways.
“It was a pleasure speaking to the students in that class,” said Arturo. “I’m always eager to help inspire students to chase a career they’ll love, especially if it’s in pavement engineering!”
