APTech selected to investigate wildfire impacts on pavements

A segment of road and the background landscape are covered in smoke due to an encroaching wildfire.

A wildfire threatens a paved road.

APTech was recently awarded a new task order to investigate the impacts of wildfires on pavements, continuing its long-standing support to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the area of pavement sustainability and infrastructure resiliency. APTech will be compiling, synthesizing, and documenting direct and indirect impacts of wildfires on pavement. This support will cut across a range of administrative, technical, and outreach activities. Under this contract, APTech will be complete the following items:

  • Develop a literature review summary report that documents the impacts of wildfires on pavement systems and transportation infrastructure.

  • Identify state departments of transportation (DOTs) and local agencies frequently dealing with wildfire issues and obtaining input and feedback on their experiences, observations, challenges, and lessons learned.

  • Develop a project summary report detailing the discussions and feedback received from the agency interviews.

  • Develop a tech brief to provide information to a wide range of audiences on specific topics related to wildfire impacts on pavement systems and transportation infrastructure assets and providing strategies to improve resilience.

  • Conducting a national-level webinar on wildfire impacts on pavement systems.
