Alumna Gen Long Returns to University of Illinois as Guest Lecturer

Gen gave a guest lecture on airfield pavement design to University of Illinois civil engineering students.

Gen Long, P.E. is one of many distinguished University of Illinois alumna who work at APTech. This past week, she had the honor of returning to her alma mater to serve as a guest lecturer for their recently reinstated Airport Design course. Gen shared her expertise in airfield pavement design and FAARFIELD with students eager to learn from a seasoned industry leader.

The Airport Design class provides students with valuable insights into the complexities of designing and maintaining airport infrastructure. Gen’s lecture, Introduction to Airfield Pavement Design, added practical, real-world perspectives to the curriculum, enriching the learning experience for students.

Course instructor Kevin Spitz, P.E., a colleague from Mead & Hunt, extended Gen the invitation to serve as guest lecturer, for which she thanked him for the chance to share her knowledge with the next generation of engineers. During her visit, Gen also had the pleasure of meeting the course’s Teaching Assistant Akash Bajaj, whose assistance with class preparation and set-up was highly appreciated.

Recalling her day, Gen expressed delight at returning to the university and seeing the transformation of familiar spaces. “It was great to see the makeover of the old hydro systems building, which included the added treat of getting to see Corn-crete hanging proudly from the ceiling—the first concrete canoe I had the pleasure to work on!”

Gen’s return to the University of Illinois served as an inspiration to current students, demonstrating the possibilities that await after graduation. Robert Wiggins is one such student—although still taking courses this semester, he plans to join APTech after graduating in May. Gen was excited to speak with Robert both before and after the course and said she looks forward to working with him in the coming months.

Gen’s dedication to sharing her expertise and her commitment to giving back to her alma mater exemplifies the APTech spirit of excellence and community. Catch Gen next in the APTech booth, March 5, at the 2024 Airport Planning, Design, and Construction Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah.
