Continuing work in pavement sustainability, APTech recently completed a study for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) use in pavement preservation surface treatments. Senior Engineer Greg Duncan, P.E., co-author and project manager of the study, will be presenting his findings at the Pennsylvania Association of Asphalt Material Applicators (PAAMA) annual conference.

The PAAMA annual conference, held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, is taking place from October 19 to 21. The event has three days of exhibits and speakers. 

Greg’s talk will summarize the findings from the first phase of the project, as well as provide case examples of how agencies use RAP in chip seals, microsurfacing, and slurry seals. It also coincides with the kickoff of the project’s phase two, which will:

• Provide a framework to determine when to use recycled materials for pavement preservation surface treatments.

• Develop guidance for strategic RAP material storage.

• Develop adaptable performance-based treatment specifications.

“I’m looking forward to hearing new perspectives and meeting new people in the industry,” said Greg. “I’ve heard RAP has been used in Pennsylvania before, so I’ll be asking about their experience.”
