APTech leads pavement sustainability talks and more at NWPMA conference

APTech’s Greg and Prashant will be in Vancouver this week for the 2022 Northwest Pavement Management Association Conference.

From October 25 to October 28, two of APTech’s engineers will be sharing their expertise in pavement management and sustainability at the 2022 Northwest Pavement Management Association (NWPMA) Conference in Vancouver, Washington. Senior Engineer Greg Duncan, P.E. and Pavement Engineer Prashant Ram, P.E. will be presenting the following:

  • Tuesday, October 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Discovery Room B. Pavement Management 101 with Greg Duncan and Sui Tan from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in the San Francisco Bay Area.

  • Wednesday, October 26 from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Heritage Room CD. LCA Pave: A Tool to Assess Environmental Impacts of Pavement Material and Design Decisions with Prashant Ram.

The Pavement Management 101 workshop with Greg and Sui is an interactive, participation-encouraged workshop. It focuses on six major components of a pavement management system including:

  • Inventory

  • Condition Assessment

  • Needed Work Determination

  • Candidate Project Determination

  • Funding Alternative Impacts

  • Upkeep and Feedback

“APTech has been involved with NWPMA for many years,” said Greg. “This is a group of advanced pavement managers from diverse communities across the northwest US. It's always a good discussion with folks who are advancing the state of the practice.”

Prashant’s presentation, LCA Pave: A Tool to Assess Environmental Impacts of Pavement Material and Design Decisions, provides a general overview of the tool. This includes discussions on its capabilities and features, in addition to how agencies can appropriately use it.

LCA Pave—a tool APTech developed for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)—offers a significant advantage to agencies quantifying the environmental impacts associated with pavement materials. As part of its efforts to address climate change, FHWA recently issued $7.1 million for 25 state departments of transportation involved in its Climate Challenge Initiative. This initiative, in combination with the use of LCA Pave, is a major step forward for public agencies’ ability to measure the impacts of sustainable pavement materials and design decisions. A full press release from the White House on LCA Pave and many other sustainability initiatives can be found here.

“I’m excited to share my knowledge on LCA Pave,” said Prashant. “The work APTech is doing in pavement sustainability is extremely important. I want to hear how the Northwest is meeting these initiatives and how APTech can help them continue to move forward.”
