APTech Authors New Publication, Concrete Preservation Guide (Third Edition)

The new Concrete Pavement Preservation Guide is here!

APTech has been at the forefront of pavement preservation for over three decades. On every project we offer our highway clients the tools and information needed to choose the right treatment for the right pavement at the right time.

APTech has continued our work in this area by teaming with the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) at Iowa State University’s Institute for Transportation to develop the third edition of the Federal Highway Administration’s Concrete Preservation Guide.

The Guide was developed by Vice President Kurt Smith, P.E. and with assistance from Pavement Engineer Prashant Ram and Senior Engineers Max Grogg, P.E., and Kelly Smith, P.E.. Kurt, Prashant, and Kelly were also responsible for authoring the second edition of the Guide in 2014 and Kurt prepared the initial document in 2008.

The new edition offers guidance on the selection, design, and construction of cost-effective concrete pavement preservation treatments. Its aim is to assist highway agencies in managing the concrete pavements in their network by using timely and effective preservation treatments.

APTech was chosen to update the existing guide to reflect the latest technological advancements and developments in the concrete pavement preservation industry. Updates include:

  • Information on new pavement evaluation equipment, technologies, and protocols.

  • Information on new materials and techniques for partial-depth repairs.

  • New information on full-depth repairs, including updated information on precast and utility cut repairs.

  • Updated information on diamond grinding and grooving, including information on slurry-handling procedures.

  • An updated chapter on joint sealing with an introduction to the use of surface sealers.

  • An abbreviated chapter on concrete overlays with links to detailed information in the Guide to Concrete Overlays (4th edition).

  • Discussion of general sustainability considerations in the selection of pavement preservation treatments.

“This Guide is the culmination of 2 years of hard work and dedication to the project,” said Kurt. “Everyone involved is very passionate about pavement preservation, and to be able to come together and collaborate successfully with the Technical Advisory cannot be understated. We’re all very proud of our work with the final product and believe that it will be found extremely practical and useful to all that use it.”
